Going to a broker used to be a guarantee of getting the best mortgage on offer - they have specialist knowledge, can trawl the market and often have exclusive deals from building societies or banks. But in the wake of the credit crunch, risk-averse lenders are taking greater control by offering 'direct-only' deals. These can be found only if a borrower trawls the internet or happens to walk into the right building society or bank. So what are the best options if you are looking for a new mortgage? There are pros and cons with brokers and direct-only, so a combination of the two should probably make up any mortgage search. JO THORNHILL reports.
BROKERS
It is important to remember that not all mortgage brokers are the same. Some can recommend deals only from a panel of lenders while others can search the whole of the market and can call themselves 'independent'. 
If you take advice from advisers in a bank or building society branch, they will usually be able to recommend only products from that lender.
